Germany's home spy company is tracking anti-lockdown protesters, claiming they are potentially interested by a plot to subvert the country.

According to a Reuters report, the BfV secret agent agency is worried that the demonstrations are being used as a cover for far-right extremists and those that imagine in "conspiracy theories" about COVID-19 to incite violence.

"Authorities fear that far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists who either deny the lifestyles of Covid or downplay its threat to public health are exploiting lockdown frustrations to stir anger in opposition to politicians and state institutions 5 months ahead of a common election," states the document.

While the federal government asserts that the movement has been radicalized, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) celebration characterised the surveillance as executive overreach.

"Organisers of demonstrations which are basically led by way of protagonists of the Querdenker movement have an agenda that is going beyond protesting in opposition to the state's measures towards the coronavirus," stated a BfV spokesperson.
